Oral Medicine Specialist
Dr Suma Sukumar is a specialist in Oral Medicine with expertise in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal conditions, oral pathology and the dental care of medically complex patients.
Dr Sukumar completed her undergraduate dental training in Adelaide before undertaking postgraduate specialist training in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology in Sydney. Her work combines careful clinical assessment with a deep understanding of the many ways that medical conditions, medications and systemic disease can affect the mouth.
Dr Sukumar holds a joint appointment as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and Staff Specialist in Oral Medicine at Westmead Centre for Oral Health, where she is involved in clinical care, academic teaching and the mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students and junior dentists. She also serves as Clinical Lead of the Medically Complex Dental Service, a role that reflects her particular experience in the assessment and dental management of patients with significant medical conditions.
Her hospital-based practice enables her to provide specialist input for patients who require careful coordination between their dental, medical and surgical treatment — a dimension of care that is especially valuable within the multidisciplinary team at Sydney Oral & Facial Surgery.
Dr Sukumar is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia. She is an invited examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, examining Histology and Pathology for the Primary Examination and Oral Medicine for the Final Section of the General Stream.
